Integrating Leadership Training Into Physician Residency Programs
Working in collaboration with the Health Science Center at Texas A & M University (Round Rock), the Maine-based Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership will lead a highly focused, intensive eight-month national planning process to design, develop and prepare to pilot two approaches for integrating substantive leadership training into physician residency programs.
The planning process will be designed to answer and address these two fundamental questions:
- What knowledge, skills, experience and support do new physicians need to be effective leaders as they embark on their professional careers?
- What is the best way to deliver a leadership curriculum in a range of residency settings across the country, especially given the substantial time limitations and many competing priorities faced by residency program leaders?
Through this planning process, the Hanley Center and HSC will engage experienced Graduate Medical Education leaders from six institutions in New England and the Southwest, as well as key leaders from a half dozen State Medical Societies to help shape curriculum design for two courses: a two-day leadership workshop and a more extensive course that would take place over a period of weeks or months.
Curricula design will be competency-based, drawing initially upon the six competencies developed by ACGME as well as those developed by the Hanley Center for its Physician Foundation-supported Maine Physician Executive Leadership Institute, which has enrolled nearly 250 physician leaders over the past 28 months in substantive year-long executive leadership and training courses. Practicing physicians in Maine and Texas will review and help refine competencies so that they reflect current and expected future needs as physicians take on roles of greater leadership and authority.
