An Intra-State Mechanism to improve Quality & Safety in Specialty Surgery

Executive Summary: University of Louisville Research Foundation’s project focused on reducing preventable mortality and morbidity in surgical care by using proven methods based on benchmark data obtained using its national pilot project funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Project leaders visited participating hospitals and surgeon’s offices across Kentucky, developed specific goals for each practice and hospital, collected and analyzed data for procedures and measures,  and recommended innovative methods for further improvement. The overall result of the program demonstrated the importance of identifying nursing leaders and connecting them with surgical specialists.
