Initiative to increase access and utility of real-time, patient-centric clinical information
Executive Summary: The Patient Safety Institute aimed to establish a portal for real-time clinical information for use by physicians within the East Tennessee Health Information Network. The goal of the project was to improve disease management and physician education by allowing them to access health information resources, reference libraries, clinical trials information and hospital information. Funding from The Physicians Foundation supported the Institute in developing a physician portal and project plan for community-wide implementation in Knoxville, TN. The four major hospitals in Knoxville accessed the portal during the first year of the grant. After the completion of the healthcare grant, the Institute continued its efforts to expand the system to patients and providers in the 16-country region and further develop the model to be replicable.
