John Ingram Institute for Physician Leadership
The Tennessee Medical Education Fund (TMEF) will continue the John Ingram Institute for Physician Leadership with two courses for 2017-2018: Physician Leadership Immersion Program and Physician Leadership Lab.
We understand that for doctors to lead and excel in today’s medical environment, they need to be as skilled in the boardroom as they are in the exam room. Our goal is to provide for our physician members, experience and training in the core aptitudes to excel in leadership positions within organized medicine, medical practice and business.
TMEF and TMA manage the John Ingram Institute for Physician Leadership to provide two courses for physician leadership training. The first course is the Physician Leadership Immersion Program which provides fundamental leadership training condensed into two very accommodating and accessible weekend time frames. For 2017 we are adding two 1-hour webinars for additional learning in response to participant feedback. Since its inception, a decade ago, we have graduated 10 classes and over 100 physicians from this program which serve in various leadership position today throughout our state.
A second course, Physician Leadership Lab, is based on the nationally accredited TeamSTEPPS program, focuses on training physicians to lead care teams for improving quality and safety while reducing costs in the clinical setting. This is a nine-month course resulting in a project that applies the formulas and skills learned to a clinical topic to improve quality, safety and efficiency. Given the emphasis placed on the industry of patient centered care and medical homes as well as the physician shortage in Tennessee, the need for leadership training in physician led care teams has become a critical focus.
