Lawrence Downs is Secretary of the Physicians Foundation and serves as chief executive officer and general counsel to the Medical Society of New Jersey. He is also the executive director of the Institute of Medicine and Public Health of New Jersey. He has extensive experience in health policy, public opinion research and media advocacy, particularly from a legal perspective.

Previously, Mr. Downs was the director of Cancer Prevention and Control at the American Cancer Society’s New Jersey Division, where he coordinated public education campaigns on the prevention and early detection of cancer. Mr. Downs also served as executive director of the New Jersey Breathes coalition and was one of the principle architects of New Jersey’s successful legislative efforts to increase the tax on tobacco products. He was elected to the Executive Board of the Litigation Center of the American Medical Association in 2009, and again in 2011.

Mr. Downs holds a J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law and an undergraduate degree in public health from The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.
