Karl M. Altenburger, M.D. Physician Leadership Academy
The Karl M. Altenburger, M.D. Physician Leadership Academy is a customized 10-month emerging leader program designed to train physicians on the fundamentals of leadership in an ever-changing medical environment. The FMA Physician Leadership Academy is specifically designed to strengthen the skills of future physician leaders as they face on-going organizational and professional challenges. The 2017-18 Physician Leadership Academy will consist of five full-day sessions over 10 months beginning in October of 2017 and ending in August of 2018. This 10-month program consists of core foundational curriculum customized to both the health care industry and the FMA organization. In addition, as a complement to its live Leadership Academy, the Foundation has spent the last two years developing a digital curriculum which can be packaged and made available via a web-based portal. It is intended that the content will be made available initially to students, residents, and fellows at no charge. Once that is well established, the Foundation will consider making the content available to wider swath of physicians who need the content but may not be able to take advantage of the in-person, intensive training sessions of the live Leadership Academy. Finally, the Foundation has been working to incorporate additional meaningful opportunities for collaboration and communication between our current leadership and our academy graduates. Overall, it is our vision that the Karl M. Altenburger Physician Leadership Academy serve not only as a as a pipeline for future leaders in organized medicine, but also a conduit for ideas and tactics that will support institutional changes to ensure the sustainability of organized medicine, and the future success of the healthcare system in Florida.
