Medical Society of Virginia Foundation
The Medical Society of Virginia (MSV), founded in 1820, represents over 10,000 Virginia physicians, residents, medical students, and PAs and strives to advance high-quality care and make Virginia the best place to practice medicine. The MSV Foundation (MSVF) serves as the 501(c)(3) arm for the MSV. Its purpose is to support Virginia physicians in the practice of medicine, regardless of specialty, level of experience, geography, or practice setting. MSVF equips physicians with the tools and resources they need to best serve themselves, their patients, and the community at large – through physician leadership development programs, health care workforce and wellness initiatives, and health care quality improvement efforts.
In 2020, MSV launched its SafeHaven™ physician wellness program. Through research preceding the creation of SafeHaven™, MSV discovered a that primary reason physicians do not seek help for burnout is fear surrounding the loss of their medical license, the loss of their employment, and the stigma associated with seeking help. SafeHaven™ ensures all clinicians and corresponding professional students can seek support for burnout, career fatigue, and mental health without the fear of undue repercussions to their employment status or medical license. It has become one of MSV’s largest strategic initiatives. MSV is committed to the success of the program; defined as affecting change in clinician burnout by removing the stigma around seeking help, removing barriers which prevent providers from addressing their well-being, and lowering the staggering clinician burnout statistics.
