Initiative to enhance the sustainability of medical practices in federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas
Executive Summary: The North Carolina Medical Society Foundation sought to provide participants in its Community Practitioner Program with resources, knowledge and technology to achieve maximum practice efficiency and productivity in delivering medical care to patients in underserved areas. Funding from The Physicians Foundation supported the project staff in developing and implementing a variety of activities, including seminars, webinars, podcasts and newsletters. Resources were made available on the North Carolina Medical Society Foundation’s PractEssentials website. In the area of technical assistance, project staff completed more than 40 practice assessments for practices and offered ongoing assistance via phone and email, in addition to the formal on-site practice assistance. Through the help of the grant, the North Carolina Medical Society Foundation was able to increase the quality and capacity of the Community Practitioner Program and launch new projects focused on improving medical care.
