In March 2017, 150 people from around the world gathered at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School for a weekend to participate in “The Patient, the Practitioner, and the Computer: Holding on to the Core of Our Healing Professions in a Time of Technological Change,” an international conference exploring the impact of the electronic health record (EHR) on the patient-practitioner relationship – primarily sponsored by the Physicians Foundation. The Physicians Foundation awarded a grant to UNC to support its work with FutureDocs, a nonpartisan, taxpaying institution that helps address the physician shortage crisis by working to identify, encourage and mentor students who wish to devote their lives to the service of humanity as physicians, medical scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. The Physicians Foundation awarded a grant to the Indiana Medical Foundation to develop a business leadership program for physicians. Sandra Miller, Director of Practice Management for the Indiana State Medical Association, discusses the partnership with Butler University and how it is helping physicians acquire business acumen.

The Physicians Foundation awarded a grant to the Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership to develop and implement a leadership development curriculum for residency programs that can be employed across the country. Judiann Smith, Executive Director of the Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership, shared information about the innovative program, highlighting how it provides clinicians with the knowledge and skills they need to be more effective leaders in today’s complex and dynamic healthcare environment.

The Physicians Foundation awarded a grant to the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2014 to launch an innovative physician leadership program focused on physician mindfulness. Douglas Ziedonis, MD, MPH, Professor and Chairman in the Department of Psychiatry at UMass Medical School & UMass Memorial Health Care, Director and developer of the Mindful Physician Leadership Program (MPLP), discusses the program and how it’s helping physicians utilize mindfulness approaches in their lives, practices, and leadership roles.
