MSMA Physician Leadership Academy

The Mississippi State Medical Association Foundation Inc. is the 501(c)(3) charitable and educational arm of MSMA. The MSMA was organized to provide educational and financial support for physicians. This includes : promoting health education to the public, providing funding for medical research, developing educational programs for physicians, providing educational assistance for medical students, and providing grants to medical professionals whose practices have been impacted by disaster. The main goal of the MSMA Foundation is to develop and support emerging physician leaders to enhance leadership skills and provide training in core aptitudes to excel as future leaders.

The purpose of the MSMA Physician Leadership Academy is to afford physicians the opportunity to enhance their personal understanding of leadership theories, concepts, contexts, and competencies, as well as move toward an understanding in practice. The curriculum uses reflection using literature texts and readings from the field of leadership studies to support the physician’s understanding of the moral responsibilities of leadership and to inspire the physicians to feel more comfortable to exercise leadership in service to society. Physicians with leadership skills are uniquely positioned to play a major role in today’s healthcare changes to better the lives of their patients.
