The Physicians Foundation Grieves the Passing of Board Member Gerald J. McKenna, MD, DFASAM, DLFAPA
The Physicians Foundation learned with great sadness that on Monday, November 1, 2021, Gerald McKenna, MD, DFASAM, DLFAPA, passed away. Dr. McKenna served on The Physicians Foundation’s Board of Directors from October 2007 to the time of his passing in 2021. He was a leader among fellow physicians and a fearless advocate against injustice, especially for people struggling with substance use disorders.
Dr. McKenna dedicated his career to advancing the practice of medicine for physicians and patients through his work with the Foundation, McKenna Recovery Centers, where he served as CEO and Medical Director, and the University of Hawai’i John A. Burns School of Medicine, where he served as a clinical professor.
Beyond his many accolades, he will be remembered as a devout leader who understood the heart and soul of practicing physicians and a champion in caring for patients.
Dr. McKenna had a remarkable impact on the Foundation and all of those who worked alongside him as a motivational physician leader and genuine patient advocate. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. McKenna’s family during this difficult time.
