The Physicians Foundation Submits Comments on Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Contract Year Proposed Rule
March 9, 2026 – The Physicians Foundation had the opportunity to submit comments on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Contract Year (CY) 2027 Medicare Advantage proposed rule, specifically on the agency’s request for information on future directions related to wellbeing and nutrition. As a public charity seeking to advance the work of practicing physicians and facilitate the delivery of high-quality healthcare to patients, The Physicians Foundation focuses on evidence-based, practical approaches that help clinicians connect patients with resources that support health, especially for diet-sensitive chronic conditions.
“Physicians see every day that access to nutritious and healthy food can shape a patient’s ability to follow their treatment plan and effectively manage chronic disease,” said Dr. Gary Price, President of The Physicians Foundation. “As CMS considers the future of Medicare Advantage, we appreciate its attention to approaches that support whole-person wellbeing and preventative care, while maintaining clear standards that promote value and strengthen the program integrity.”
The Physicians Foundation also recognizes CMS’ opportunity to bring greater clarity and consistency to nutrition supports in Medicare Advantage. Today, pathways for nutrition-related benefits can be difficult to navigate and may delay access for patients who could benefit sooner, while also creating avoidable administrative complexity for plans and care teams. Physicians know that when our patients can’t access healthy food, it accelerates chronic disease. Our recent survey of front-line physicians found that 79% report that a patient’s inability to access healthy food directly interfered with chronic disease management in the past year.
The Physicians Foundation remains committed to elevating physician perspectives and sharing research and tools that help care teams address nutrition as part of comprehensive patient care.
