Leadership training for physicians in member health centers and a toolkit for leading implementation of HIT
The Alabama Primary Health Care Association (APHCA) designed a comprehensive leadership development toolkit entitled, “CLIMBing Gear: The Tools You Need to Reach the Summit.” CLIMB Alabama (Clinical Leadership for Improving Medicine and Business) provides a variety of leadership development modules designed to equip Alabama’s Community Health Center physicians with skills to develop a culture of team-based care supported by Health Information Technology. APHCA worked with physicians and EMR steering committees, which included the CEO, CMO, IT officer, nursing representative and other designated staff to coordinate the initiative. APHCA helped define potential risks and guided the resolution to successfully manage the project. Prior to CLIMB only 27 percent of practices were using an EMR and no providers were using the EMR in a meaningful way. By January 2012, 100 percent of APHCA medical practices have either implemented EMR or are scheduled to implement an EMR.
