Butte-Glenn Medical Society/Healthy Rural California
Grant Details
Healthy Nor Cal
“Butte-Glenn Medical Society is a physician-led membership organization located in Northern California. The California Medical Association (CMA) is the only physician organization serving the needs of physicians, patients and of organized medicine throughout the state. Affiliated with CMA, Butte-Glenn Medical Society’s mission is to promote the science and art of medicine, to protect public health, and to promote improvement of the medical profession. BGMS physician members provide care throughout Butte and Glenn counties. According to our files, the colorful history of the Butte-Glenn Medical Society starts with meetings of a dozen physicians in Oroville, the seat of Butte County, in 1857. Stops and starts were common with early medical organizations until the 1900s. Glenn County was organized in 1891 and its first medical association formed shortly thereafter. There were informal alliances between Butte County and Glenn County physicians until their formal union into one society, Butte-Glenn Medical Society, in 1946. Now, physician membership includes both BGMS and CMA dues, providing more resources for physicians, unifying local and state advocacy efforts and strengthening organized medicine. The non-profit arm of Butte-Glenn Medical Society is Healthy Rural California, a 501c(3) non-profit. Beginning in the north state, Healthy Rural California aims to meet the public health needs of California’s rural communities by closing the gap in quality, access, and equity and eliminating health disparities. We fulfill our mission through building strong partnerships and coalitions, increasing the number and quality of physicians and other healthcare providers, and addressing rural community health needs such as mental health, opioid use disorder, and excessive alcohol use.
Butte-Glenn Medical Society will create a comprehensive resource directory of organizations addressing drivers of health and collect valuable data on the referrals made by physicians.
This resource will support healthcare providers in connecting patients with relevant services and contribute to a more holistic approach to healthcare that addresses social determinants of health.”
