Kanof Institute for Physician Leadership: Renewal 2020

Over the next two years, KIPL will train two cohorts of the Leadership College, two cohorts of HCLM, and will begin the Future Clinician Leaders College in virtual and in-person sessions. KIPL will also increase faculty development to include training on stress and burnout, and racism’s effect on health. While each educational track has its own unique focus and audience, KIPL’s overall approach is to provide practicing physicians and other members of the healthcare team experiential learning paired with mentoring and coaching to give them skills necessary to lead in a complex and rapidly changing environment.

KIPL curriculum builds from the NCMSF Leadership Model that focuses on seven leadership dimensions, which have been researched and validated to create new mental models for leadership. The model includes systems thinking as well as context while strongly emphasizing authenticity and emotional intelligence. All programs are developed around the model which includes the following seven dimensions:
• Contextual Understanding
• Visionary Outlook & Purpose
• Develop Self and Others
• Inspire Accountability and Responsibility & Empower People
• Promote Teamwork
• Collaborate Across Boundaries
• Influence for Results

A core element of all programs is the focus on self-awareness and authenticity as a foundation for effective leadership. By positioning leadership development around self-development and positive psychology, individuals develop hope, optimism, and resilience. Research shows that this leadership philosophy is fundamental to building leaders with higher resiliency to stress and burnout.
